Compostable bags, unlike traditional plastic, offer an eco-friendly end-of-life solution. Their life cycle begins with the sourcing of renewable materials, often plant-based starches like corn or potato. These materials are processed and manufactured into bags. After use, ideally for organic waste collection, the crucial stage begins: composting.
In a suitable composting environment – with adequate moisture, oxygen, and microorganisms – the bag breaks down. This decomposition process, usually taking weeks to months depending on conditions, transforms the bag into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. The resulting compost enriches the soil, supporting new plant growth and effectively closing the loop. It’s a cyclical process, returning nutrients to the earth, reducing landfill waste, and minimizing the long-term environmental impact associated with persistent plastics.
